Information from Microsoft

Unified messaging

  • voice mail system
    • Exchange 2007 can answer the telephone and record a message whenever the user’s phone goes unanswered or is busy
  • fax receiving
  • speech-enabled auto-attendant
    • An auto-attendant provides professional switchboard-like capabilities, with integrated speech recognition and the ability for callers to

search the company directory

  • Outlook voice access
    • Users can access their Exchange Server 2007 mailboxes using any telephone, hearing their e-mail and calendar entries and taking action on them using either speech or key pad commands
    • demo (110K or 300K); duration 4.5 mins
  • unified messaging demo (110K or 300K); duration: 2 mins

Local Continuous replication (LCR)

  • local log shipping
  • transaction logs of the production storage group are log shipped to the LCR location and then replayed into the LCR storage group
  • In the event of a disk failure or data corruption, the administrator can quickly switch to the copy database, offering an economical way to

achieve high availability

  • this could mean that you could potentially do exchange backups on a weekly rather than daily basis
  • LCR is supported in both Exchange 2007 standard and enterprise edition
  • more information: site1
  • demo (110K or 300K); duration: 3.55 mins

Clustered Continuous Replication (CCR)

  • log shipping to another server
  • active/passive relationship
  • Shared storage is not required, so nodes can be potentially located in separate geographical locations (providing they are on the same subnet)
  • A traditional 2 node active/passive cluster (now called a “single copy cluster”) certainly has its benefits, but it also has one major drawback and that is you still have a single point of failure when it comes to Exchange databases.
  • CCR is only supported in Exchange 2007 enterprise edition; single copy clusters (or server clustering is also only available in the enterprise edition)
  • limitations:
    • the active and passive CCR servers need to be on the same subnet
    • since this uses a “majority node set” cluster, you will require also require the two CCR server to be running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (or Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise edition)
    • you’ll need a 3rd server to act as the “file share witness” (preferably the Exchange hub transport server)
    • you can only use one database per storage group for CCR
    • You cannot create a public folder database in a CCR environment if you already have more than one public folder database in your organization.
    • In a CCR environment, Microsoft recommends that you create no more than 30 storage groups and databases (one database per storage group) on the clustered mailbox server.
    • The cluster in which Exchange 2007 is installed cannot contain Exchange Server 200x, or any version of Microsoft SQL Server. Running Exchange 2007 in a cluster with any of these other applications is not supported.

Improved OWA

  • rich OWA web client which is very similar to the Outlook 2007 fat client; demo 1, demo 2 (110K or 300K)

  • two-factor authentication support
  • address book enhancements; demo (110K or 300K)

  • powerful search capabilities; demo (110K or 300K)

  • attachment viewing in HTML format (WebReady); demo (110K or 300K)
    • works for: Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF attachments

  • improved Out of Office Assistant; demo (110K or 300K)
    • can schedule the Out of Office Assistant messages ahead of time
    • separate internal and external Out of Office messages

Document access

  • OWA and ActiveSync act as a proxy for Microsoft Windows Sharepoint Services and Windows Server file share data
  • Can enable access to documents through OWA without directly exposing the document stores on the internet
  • this technology is called “LinkAccess”

Improved mobile messaging

  • mobile messaging demo (110K or 300K)
  • ActiveSync (direct push)
  • self-service device wipe
    • if a device is lost or stolen, the user can clear the contents of the mobile device or reset the device’s password via Outlook Web Access

  • search for all mail content on the Exchange server; you’re not limited to the RAM available on your mobile device

  • flag messages

  • set the Out of Office message

Native 64-bit

  • more RAM capability
32 bit 64 bit
Win2003 Std 4 GB 64 GB
Win2003 Ent 64 GB 1 TB
  • larger cache
  • disk I/O reduced by 70% (due to larger cache)
  • in current storage environments, bandwidth is the limiting factor, not capacity
  • since bandwidth consumption has now been reduced by 70%, this enables us to use a smaller amount of larger capacity disks and/or use cheaper storage alternatives (such as iSCSI)
    • can fit 4 times more users
    • larger inboxes

Outlook AutoDiscovery

  • Outlook client queries AD in order to find out which Exchange server hosts its mailbox, and then communicates directly with that target Exchange server; demo (110K or 300K)

Edge/perimeter services

  • antispam built into the Edge Transport role
  • multi-engine antivirus, antispam and antiphishing can be configured via Exchange Hosted Filtering or Forefront for Exchange Server
  • Exchange Hosted Filtering and Forefront Security for Exchange Server are included with the Exchange Server 2007 Enterprise CAL license

Exchange Hosted Services

Exchange hosted services screenshots:

  • When the target Exchange server is unavailable, Exchange Hosted Services will just spool all of the incoming content, until the target Exchange server becomes available again:

Forefront Security for Exchange

Forefront screenshots:

Forefront demo: 110K or 300K. Duration: 2.40 mins.

Exchange Roles

edge transport role

  • this is the only perimeter role, which is typically deployed in a DMZ segment
  • functions: routing, hygiene (filtering, antispam, antivirus)
    • communicates with the internal hub transport role
  • demo: 110K or 300K. Duration: 3 mins
  • Screenshots:

client access role

  • functions: OWA, ActiveSync, Offline address book

hub transport role

  • functions: routing, policies and compliance (eg journaling, message classifications rules)
    • demo of setting up a transport rule prohibiting one internal group (brokers) from communicating with another internal group (analysts).
    • demo of setting up a journaling rule for a specific user/group
    • demo of setting up a (server-side) message classification rule which is enforced to all users
  • need one hub transport for every AD site in which you have an Exchange server in

mailbox role

  • functions: mailboxes, public folders

unified messaging role

  • functions: voice messaging, fax, speech recognition

Sample flow

  • internet ⇒ outer firewall ⇒ edge transport role ⇒ internal firewall ⇒ hub transport role ⇒ mailbox role

Advanced management tools

  • easy installation; demo (110K or 300K)

  • easy mailbox migrations; demo (110K or 300K)

  • Exchange management shell (PowerShell/Monad)

  • new graphical Exchange management console

  • integrated toolbox

  • integration with Microsoft Operations Manager
