The starting point for SP1 setup/upgrade should be the What’s New in SP1, SP1 Release Notes, and Prerequisites docs. As with any new release, there are some frequently asked deployment questions, and known issues, or issues reported by some customers. You may not face these in your environment, but we’re posting these here along with some workarounds so you’re aware of them as you test and deploy SP1.

Upgrade order
The order of upgrade from Exchange 2010 RTM to SP1 hasn’t changed from what was done in Exchange 2007. Upgrade server roles in the following order:

Client Access server
Hub Transport server
Unified Messaging server
Mailbox server
The Edge Transport server role can be upgraded at any time; however, we recommend upgrading Edge Transport either before all other server roles have been upgraded or after all other server roles have been upgraded. For more details, see Upgrade from Exchange 2010 RTM to Exchange 2010 SP1 in the documenation.

SP1 Prerequisites

SP1 requires the installation of 4-5 hotfixes, depending on the operating system – Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2. To install the Exchange 2010 SP1 administration tools on Windows 7 and Windows Vista, you requires 2 hotfixes.

Note: Due to the shared code base for these updates, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista share the same updates. Similarly, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 share the same updates. Make sure you select the x64 versions of each update to be installed on your Exchange 2010 servers.

Here’s a matrix of the updates required, including download locations and file names.

Some of the hotfixes would have been rolled up in a Windows update or service pack. Given that the Exchange team released SP1 earlier than what was planned and announced earlier, it did not align with some of the work with the Windows platform. As a result, some hotfixes are available from MSDN/Connect, and some require that you request them online using the links in the corresponding KBAs. The administrator experience when initially downloading these hotfixes may be a little odd. However, once you download the hotfixes, and receive two of the hotfixes from CSS, you can use the same for subsequent installs on other servers. In due course, all these updates may become available on the Download Center, and also through Windows Update.

These hotfixes have been tested extensively as part of Exchange 2010 SP1 deployments within Microsoft and by our TAP customers. They are fully supported by Microsoft.

Prerequisite download pages linked from SP1 Setup are unavailable
When installing Exchange Server 2010 SP1 the prereq check may turn up some required hotfixes to install. The message will include a link to click for help. Clicking this link redirects you to a page saying that the content does not exist.

We’re working to update the linked content.

Meanwhile, please refer to the TechNet article Exchange 2010 Prerequisites to download and install the prerequisites required for your server version (the hotfixes are linked to in the above table, but you’ll still need to install the usual prerequisites such as .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, Windows Remote Management (WinRM) 2.0, and the required OS components).

The Missing Exchange Management Shell Shortcut
Some customers have reported that after upgrading an Exchange Server 2010 server to Exchange 2010 SP1, the Exchange Management Shell shortcut is missing from program options. Additionally, the .ps1 script files associated with the EMS may also be missing.

We’re actively investigating this issue. Meanwhile, here’s a workaround:

Verify that the ConnectFunctions.ps1, commonconnectfunctions.ps1 and RemoteExchange.ps1 files are present in the %ExchangeInstallPath%\bin directory.
NOTE: If these files are missing, you can copy the files from the Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 installation media to the %ExchangeInstallPath%\bin directory. These files are present in the \setup\serverroles\common folder.

Click Start -> AdmiinistrativeTools ->, right-click Windows PowerShell Modules, select Send to -> Desktop (as shortcut)
Go to the Properties of the shortcut and on Target replace the path to C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -noexit -command “. ‘C:\Program Files\Exchange Server\V14\bin\RemoteExchange.ps1′; Connect-ExchangeServer -auto”
Note: if the Exchange installation folder or drive name is different than the default, you need to change the path accordingly.

Upgrading Edge Transport on Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) and Forefront Protection for Exchange 2010
If you upgrade a server with the Edge Transport server role running with ForeFront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) and ForeFront Protection for Exchange (FPE) enabled for SMTP protection, the ForeFront TMG Managed Control Service may fail to start and E-mail policy configuration settings cannot be applied.

The TMG team is working on this issue. See Problems when installing Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1 on a TMG configured for Mail protection on the ForeFront TMG (ISA) Team Blog. Exchange 2010 SP1 Release Notes has been updated with the above information.

Static Address Book Service Port Configuration Changes
The location for setting the port the address book service should use has changed in SP1. In Exchange 2010 RTM you had to edit the Microsoft.exchange.addressbook.service.exe.config to configure the service port. In SP1 you must use the following registry key:
Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MSExchangeAB\Parameters
Value name: RpcTcpPort
Type: REG_SZ (String)

When you apply SP1 to a machine where you had previously configured a static port by editing the Microsoft.exchange.addressbook.service.exe.config file, the upgrade process will not carry forward your static port assignments. Following a restart, the Address Book Service will revert to using a dynamic port instead of a static port specified in the config file. This may cause interruptions in service.

As with all upgrades where servers are in load balanced pools, we recommend you perform a rolling upgrade — removing servers from the pool, updating them and then moving the pool to the newly upgraded machines. Alternatively, we recommend that you upgrade an array of servers by draining connections from any one machine before you upgrade it.

There are times when these approaches may not be possible. You can maintain your static port configuration, and have it take effect the moment the address book service starts for the first time following the application of the service pack, by creating the registry key BEFORE you apply SP1 to your server. The registry key has no impact pre SP1, and so by configuring it before you apply the Service Pack you can avoid the need to make changes to set the port post install, and avoid any service interruptions.

iPhone, OWA Premium and POP3 & IMAP4 issues due to invalid accepted domain
After applying E2010 SP1:

iPhone users may not be able to view the content of incoming messages in their Inboxes, and when they try to open a message, they get an error saying:

This message has not been downloaded from the server.
Admins may see the following event logged in the Application Event Log on Exchange 2010 CAS Server:

Watson report about to be sent for process id: 1234, with parameters: E12, c-RTL-AMD64, 14.01.0218.011, AirSync, MSExchange ActiveSync, Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.InboundConversionOptions.CheckImceaDomain, UnexpectedCondition:ArgumentException, 4321, 14.01.0218.015.

OWA Premium users may not be able to reply or forward a message. They may see the following error in OWA:

An unexpected error occurred and your request couldn’t be handled. Exception type: System.ArgumentException, Exception message: imceaDomain must be a valid domain name.

POP3 & IMAP4 users may also not be able to retrieve incoming mail and Admins will see the following event logged in Event Log:

ERR Server Unavailable. 21; RpcC=6; Excpt=imceaDomain must be a valid domain name.

Resolution
Please run the following command under Exchange Management Shell and verify that there is one domain marked as ‘Default’ and it’s DomainName & Name values are valid domain names. We were able to reproduce the issue by setting a domain name with a space in it, like “aa bb”

Get-AcceptedDomain | fl

If you also have an invalid domain name there (for example, a domain name with a space in it), then removing the space and restarting the server will fix the EAS (iPhone), OWA, POP3 & IMAP4 issues as mentioned above.

Command to run under EMS would be:

Set-AcceptedDomain –Identity <value> -Name “ValidSMTPDomainName”

Thes examples update the Name parameter of the “My Company” and “ABC Local” accepted domains (the space is removed from both):

Error when adding or removing a mailbox database copy
If a server running Exchange 2010 RTM (or Exchange 2010 SP1 Beta) is upgraded to Exchange 2010 SP1, administrators may experience an error when using the Add-MailboxdDatabaseDopy or Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy cmdlets to add or remove DAG members.

When you try to add a DAG member, you may see the following error:

Add-MailboxDatabaseCopy DAG-DB0 -MailboxServer DAG-2

The result:

The command is not successful in adding the copy or updating Active Directory to show the copy was added. This happens due to presence of the DumpsterInfo registry key.

Workaround: Delete the DumpsterInfo key, as shown below.

Identify the GUID of the database that is being added using this command:

Get-MailboxDatabase DAG-DB0 | fl name,GUID

The result:

Name : DAG-DB0
Guid : 8d3a9778-851c-40a4-91af-65a2c487b4cc

On the server specified in the add command, using the database GUID identified, remove the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Replay\State\<DB-GUID>\DumpsterInfo

The GUID identified in this case is 8d3a9778-851c-40a4-91af-65a2c487b4cc. With this information you can now export and delete the DumpsterInfo key on the server where you are attempting to add the mailbox database copy. This can be easily done using the registry editor, but if you have more than a handful of DAG members, this is best automated using the Shell.

This example removes the DumpsterInfo key from the 8d3a9778-851c-40a4-91af-65a2c487b4cc key:

Remove-Item HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\Replay\State\8d3a9778-851c-40a4-91af-65a2c487b4cc\DumpsterInfo

To automate this across all servers in your organization, use the DeleteDumpsterRegKey.ps1 script.

Description: The DeleteDumpsterRegkey.ps1 script can be used to delete the offending DumpsterInfo registry keys that can cause this problem on all mailbox servers in the organization. Rename the file to DeleteDumpsterRegkey.ps1 (remove the .txt extension).

Gerekçesi olmayanlar, zorlayarak dahi olsa, gerekçe yaratıyorlar.

- Bir kesim, taslağın tamamen Ak Parti’nin önünü açmak, yargı engelini yok etmek için ortaya konduğunu belirtiyor. Yapılan hesaplara göre, laik sistemi koruyan Asker unsurunun ortadan kaldırılmasından sonra, şimdi de sıra yargıda. Böylece başta Anayasa Mahkemesi’ne olmak üzere, iktidar partisi kendi yargıçlarını getirecek ve istediği kararları geçirtebilecek.
- Askere yeniden bir darbe vuruluyor ve laik sistemi korumak için, herhangi bir müdahale kapısı kapanıyor. Hiç değilse, Asker baskısının caydırıcılığı azaltılıyor.
- İşçi kesimi olaya, haklı olarak kendi açısından bakıyor ve bu değişikliğin içinde kendileriyle ilgili hiçbir şeyin bulunmadığını, eski 12 Eylül Anayasası’nın ruhunu sürdürdüğünü belirtiyor.
- Başta Kürtler olmak üzere, farklı gerekçelerle bir başka kesim de, değişikliğin çok yapay ve son derece yetersiz olduğunu vurgulayarak karşı çıkıyor. Yepyeni bir anayasa hazırlanması gerekirken, göz boyamak için önemli olmayan maddelerle yetinildiğine dikkat çekip reddedeceğini söylüyor.
- Muhalefetin derdi ise tamamen siyasi. Onlar, ne pahasına olursa olsun, Erdoğan’ın burnunu sürtmek istiyorlar. HAYIR anlamına gelecek bir oylamanın iktidar partisinin karizmasını mahvedeceği ve genel seçimlere bozuk bir moralle girmesine yol açacağı için, bastırıyorlar.

Ben ise 12 Eylül’deki referandumda “EVET” oyu kullanacağım.

HAYIR demek isteyenlerin gerekçeleri, eminim kendi mantıkları içinde son derece haklıdır. Bazı gerekçelere ben de katılabilirim. Ancak hiçbiri, önümüzdeki fırsatın kaçırılmasını gerektirecek kadar güçlü değil.

Bakın neden…

- 30 yıldır, askeri darbelerden kurtulmak için kitaplar yazdım, köşe yazıları, söyleşiler, TV programlarıyla, askerin siyaset dışına çıkması için uğraştım. Bugüne kadar kimseler çıkıp bu yönde somut adım atmadı veya atamadı. Yıllardır bekledim ve tam ümidimi tümüyle kesiyordum ki, önüme bu değişiklik geldi. Önümüze gelen bu taslak da yetersiz sayılabilir. Ancak sembolik dahi sayılsa, yine de darbecileri bundan böyle, harekete geçmeden önce iki-üç defa düşündürecek bir düzenleme getiriliyor. Benim için, demokratikleşme yolunda, bu adım son derece önemlidir. Daha iyisini, en idealini uzun yıllar beklemek istemiyorum. Bundan sonra bir daha Anayasa değişikliğine gidilmesinin güçlüğünü de görüyorum. Dolayısıyla elimdekiyle yetinmek istiyorum. İlerde daha iyisini yapan çıkarsa, başımın üstünde yeri var.
- Bu değişikliklerin yargıyı AKP’nin emrine sokacağına, daha ilk başlarda da inanmıyordum, hele şimdi Anayasa Mahkemesinin getirdiği değişikliklerden sonra daha da inanmaz oldum. Ayrıca, yargı laik sistemin değil, hukukun koruyucusu olması gerekir. Laik sistemi koruyup kollamak, bizlerin yani toplumun görevi olmalıdır.
- Erdoğan’a siyasi ders vermek ve burnunu kanatmak isteyen varsa, bunu Genel Seçimlerde denemeleri gerekir. Benim de Başbakan konusunda kuşku ve kaygılarım var. Ben de (dünkü yazımda belirttiğim gibi) bazı politikalarından ve yaklaşımından rahatsızım. Bende de, AKP yorgunluğu var, ancak bu mesajın gönderilme tarihi 12 Eylül olmamalı. İki konunun birbirinden ayrılması gerektiğine inanıyorum.

Özetlemem gerekirse, Referandum ile Genel Seçimi birbirine karıştırmak ve elimize geçmiş olan bir şansı -ne kadar yetersiz olursa olsun- kaçırmak istemiyorum. 50 yıldan beri hayatımızı zorlaştıran ve hemen her konuda gerilememize neden olan Askeri darbeler döneminin kapandığı mesajını, başka nedenlerle şimdi yollayamazsam, kendi kendime ihanet etmiş sayarım.

In order to use the BIS service you will obviously need a BlackBerry device, and also have the BIS tariff enabled on your SIM card by your mobile operator.

In this article I am using Vodafone as the network operator, but the instructions are common to all operators that offer BIS. Al operators that do, will have a web site hosted by RIM accessible by users. To activate your new account, browse to the operator’s BIS Portal. In the case of Vodafone UK, the site is accessible here – https://bis.eu.blackberry.com/html?brand=vodauk

Select the option to create a new account:

Read the terms and conditions and select the option to agree if you accept:

Enter the PIN number and IMEI number of your BlackBerry handheld. This information can be found on your device by browsing to Options –> Status.

Enter your desired username and password to access the BIS Portal in the future:

Enter in the email address of the account you wish to activate, as well as the password for that email account.

The setup wizard will now attempt to determine the correct connection settings to use automatically based on the email address entered. This process may work for commonly-used email accounts such as Hotmail or Gmail. If the wizard is not able to determine the settings to use the following will be displayed:

Select the type of email account you wish to configure. Personal email accounts would be POP or IMAP-based accounts along the lines of a Hotmail or a GoogleMail account. It may also apply to work accounts that only support POP or IMAP access, such as a Domino-based account (I appreciate that Domino does provide webmail access, but not for the purposes of this service it doesn’t).

If you have an Exchange server deployed that is configured to provide Outlook Web Access (or webmail – access to email via a web browser), select this option:

Enter in the webmail address of your Exchange server, the address you enter to access your email via your web browser. This is normally of the form:

Complete your email address, username and password information. Your username and password will be the same details you use to log into your Windows PC. RIM recommend operating up to a maximum of 75 users if the BES Express software is being installed directly onto the Exchange server itself. On a standalone server, BES Express can support up to 2,000 users. Multiple BES Express servers can be deployed in the same BlackBerry domain.

Preparing an Exchange 2010 environment

NOTE – this article assumes an Exchange 2010 installation only. Visit the BES Express section of the blog for details on installing the solution against Exchange 2003 or 2007.

Ensure that Exchange 2010 Update Rollup 1 is installed on the Exchange 2010 server. This package is available here – http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=371add31-d7a0-4…

If installing the BES Express software on the Exchange server itself, the Exchange server should NOT itself also be a domain controller.

Create a domain user account called BesAdmin

On the Exchange server, in the Active Directory Users and Computers console, create a domain user called “BesAdmin” and assign it an Exchange mailbox. Set the user account password to never expire.

Send an email to the BesAdmin user to initialise the Exchange mailbox.

Assign the BesAdmin user local administrative rights

On the server that is to host the BES Express, make the BesAdmin domain user a member of the local administrator group. NOTE – the BES Express server will first need to have been added to the Domain if not done already.
To do this, on the BES Express server, right click on the icon for My Computer and select Manage. Browse to Local Users and Groups –> Groups –> Administrators and add the BesAdmin user:

Assign the BesAdmin user “log on as a service” rights

On the BES Express server, also assign the BesAdmin domain user account “log on as a service” rights. To do this, select Administrative Tools –> Local Security Policy –> User Rights Assignment –> Log on as a service and add the BesAdmin user:

Assign “Receive As” and “Administer Information Store” rights to the BesAdmin user

On the Exchange server, launch the Exchange PowerShell and issue the following command:

Get-MailboxDatabase | Add-ADPermission -User "BesAdmin" -AccessRights
 ExtendedRight -ExtendedRights Receive-As, ms-Exch-Store-Admin

Assign Exchange View-Only Administrator rights to the BesAdmin user

Still within the Exchange PowerShell, now issue the following command:

Add -RoleGroupMember "View-Only Organization Management" -Member "BesAdmin"

Assign “Send As” rights on the domain to the BesAdmin user

Within the Active Directory Users and Computers console, open the View menu and select the option to display Advanced Features.

Right click on the domain and select Properties. Click on the Security tab:

Click on the Advanced button:

Click on Add and type in the name of the BesAdmin user:

Select the option to Apply Onto User Objects.
Scroll down to the bottom and tick the option to enable Send As rights:

For good measure, also enable Send As rights on the Exchange server itself within the Exchange PowerShell. Launch the console and issue the following command:

Add-ADPermission -InheritedObjectType User -InheritanceType Descendents -ExtendedRights
Send-As -User "BesAdmin" -Identity "CN=Users,DC=domain,DC=com"

(where “domain” and “com” should be substituted for your specific domain details, eg: DC=brightpoint,DC=co,DC=uk and so on)

To force all of the above changes to take effect on the domain, it may be worth running a group policy update. On the Exchange server click Start –> Run and issue the command “gpupdate /force”

Turn off Exchange 2010 Client Throttling

Exchange 2010 uses client throttling by default to protect the Exchange server from excessive user demands. RIM recommend turning off this feature as it can have an adverse affect on the performance of the BES solution. This is done within the Exchange PowerShell console.
Launch the console and issue the following command to get the “Identity” of the default throttling policy”

Get-ThrottlingPolicy | Where-Object {$_.IsDefault -eq "True"} | FL Identity

the Identity will be displayed:

Now issue the following command:

Set-ThrottlingPolicy -RCAMaxConcurrency $null

You will be prompted to enter the Identity to apply the policy to, enter the result returned above:

Increase the maximum number of connections to the Exchange Address Book Service

On the Exchange Server (or specifically the Client Access Server in a multi-box deployment), browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin and locate the file “microsoft.exchange.addressbook.service.exe.config” and open it in NotePad:

Locate the line “MaxSessionsPerUser”:

Increase the value to 100000. Save the file then restart the Address Book Service:

Install the Exchange MAPI CDO 1.2.1 package

The Microsoft Exchange MAPI CDO 1.2.1 package must be installed to provide the BesAdmin user a MAPI connection to Exchange mailboxes as well as access to calendaring information. This package is available for download from our FTP site HERE (Exchange 2010 only).

Run the installer and accept the license agreement:

Now you’re ready to install the BES Express software.

Installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express software

LOG INTO THE BES EXPRESS SERVER AS THE BESADMIN USER!

Launch the BES Express installer, you will be prompted to confirm that you are indeed logged in as the correct user:

Click Continue Installation:

Choose your country and read the license agreement. Select the option to accept if you agree to the terms and conditions:

Select the option to Create a BlackBerry Configuration Database:

Select the option to install a BlackBerry Enterprise Server:

Verify that all pre-requisite checks are completed successfully, paying attention to any warnings or failures:

In this article I am allowing the BES Express installer to install a local copy of SQL Server Express, if you intend to use a dedicated SQL Server, select this option and enter the details of the server address:

Enter the password for the BesAdmin account and enter in a name for the BES Express server: this name can be a ‘friendly’ one and is used to identify it in the Web Administration interface:

If you are warned that the server does not have sufficient free disk space available, free up some space before continuing:

A summary of the installation options will be displayed:

Click Install, the required components will now be installed, this process may take a while. When complete you will be prompted to reboot the server:

Click Yes. Once rebooted, log back in as the BesAdmin user. The installation will resume automatically:

Enter a name for the Configuration Database – this should ideally be left at the default unless specifically required. Click Next:

You will be prompted to create the database, click Yes:

When created, click OK:

Enter in the 10,000-user CAL, SRP key and SRP authentification key you were supplied along with the BES Express download. Verify connectivity to the RIM Relay on TCP port 3101. Click Next:

The MAPI connection settings will now be required, enter in the name of the Exchange server as well as the BesAdmin user account mailbox. Click OK:

Enter in the name you wish to use for the Administration web site. Again this should be left at the default if you are unsure as to what this means. Any name you choose should be resolvable via DNS if not using the default option.
Enter in a password for the SSL certificate – this is generated automatically by the installer and assigned to the Apache-based administration web site (the site does not run within IIS). The certificate is generated based on the name entered.
By default the administration web site runs on port 3443 – this can be altered if desired but again leave this value at the default unless specifically required. Click Next:

Enter in the details of the BesAdmin user account again and click Next:

Specify whether you wish access to the administration web site to be authenticated based on Active Directory credentials, or whether you want to use the built-in BlackBerry Administration Service authentication. If you select the second option, enter in a password for the default admin account.

NOTE – if you select BlackBerry Administration Service authentication, the default admin username is “ADMIN”, NOT “BESADMIN”.

Click Next:

Select the option to Start Services and verify that all services start successfully:

Click Next:

You will be reminded what the address is to access the administration web site. Click Finish.

The software is now installed and ready to use. To access the web administration site, a link will have been added to the Programs folder on the Start menu:

Selecting the link will launch the default browser on the server (which needs to be Internet Explorer 6 or later):

Log in ether as the BesAdmin user (using Windows authentication) or as the Admin user (using BlackBerry authentication):

Add the web site to the Trusted Sites group in the Internet Explorer security options area:

And add the web site certificate to the trusted certificate authority folder:

Adding Users

In the Administration web site, select the option to Create a user:

Selecting Search will display a list of all available users:

Tick the user(s) you want to add and click Continue:

Select the BES Server the users should be added to (you’ll only have one option) and click Next. The users will now be added to the BES Server.

To associate a device to a user, the BlackBerry handheld itself can be connected directly to the BES Express server via USB. In the Administration web site browse to Devices –> Attached Devices –> Overview:

When the device is connected, its PIN details will be displayed:

Select the option to Assign current device to a user. Select the user you want to associate the device with:

The device will now be associated to the user and will automatically activate itself and begin to download user mailbox data.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter any problems adding or activating users, first verify that all BlackBerry services have started and are running correctly:

Exchange Permissions

The commonest cause of problems when troubleshooting issues with a BES installation is that the correct permissions have not been assigned to the BesAdmin user on the domain and the Exchange server as detailed above.
Included with the BES Express software is a utility called “IEMSTEST” which can verify the BesAdmin user’s access to specific user mailboxes.

The utility lives in the C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Utility folder and needs to be run at the command line:

Select the BlackBerryServer MAPI profile when prompted:

Select the user account you wish to query:

The permissions will be tested:

As you can see from the above screenshot this test has indicated that the BesAdmin account does not have Send As rights on my James Liddiard user account. Once I verify my permissions, re-running the test indicates that all test have passed successfully:

With the release of Exchange Server 2010 last November, we introduced integrated archiving capabilities aimed at helping you preserve and discover e-mail data. In SP1, we’ve enhanced this archiving functionality based on the great feedback you’ve given us since our launch. This includes adding the flexibility to provision a user’s Personal Archive to a different mailbox database from their primary mailbox. This means your organization can now more easily implement separate storage strategies (or tiered storage) for less frequently accessed e-mail. And, we didn’t just stop there! We’ve also added new server side capabilities so you can import historical e-mail data from .PST files, directly into Exchange, as well as IT pro controls to enable delegate access to a user’s Personal Archive.

To help streamline the implementation of retention policies, SP1 updates the Exchange Management Console with new tools to create Retention Policy Tags, so you can automate the deletion and archiving of e-mail and other Exchange items. New optional Retention Policy Tags give you even more flexibility in defining your organizations retention management strategy.

Lastly, we’ve made several improvements to the Multi-Mailbox Search features, which can be used to conduct e-Discovery of e-mail for legal, regulatory or other reasons. A new search preview helps with, for example, early case assessment by providing you an estimate on the number of items in the result set-with keyword statistics-before e-mail located in the search are copied to the designated discovery mailbox. And, you now have a new search result de-duplication option, that when checked, only copies one instance of a message to the discovery mailbox. This can help you reduce the amount of e-mail you need to review following the search. Finally, added support for annotation of reviewed items means you can make your e-Discovery workflow even more efficient and less time consuming or costly.

For those of you that have been holding your breath for this one, we’re also happy to let you know that in SP1 timeframe, there will be an update which will enable us to support access to a user’s Personal Archive with Outlook 2007.

Outlook Web App – Better Than Ever

We didn’t stop working with archiving and discovery, OWA gets a significant facelift with SP1 as well. With new work to pre-fetch message content, the OWA reading experience becomes faster. With delete, mark as read, and categorize operations running asynchronously, these actions feel instantaneous to the user. We’ve also made sure that certain long running operations, such as attaching a very large file, will not block the rest of the OWA experience, protecting the user from irritating web UI hang-ups. You’ll see a number of other UI improvements as well to de-clutter a bit; helping make it easier to find common tasks with updated action icons and menus. The simpler UI will make OWA much friendlier to the smaller screens of ever popular Netbooks. Users will also be able to share their calendars to anonymous viewers via the web, assuming you enable this functionality as the admin.

In RTM, we delivered Information Rights Management (IRM) capabilities in OWA, allowing you to read and compose IRM-protected messages just like you’ve been able to do with Outlook in the past. In SP1, you’ll be able to add Web-Ready Document Viewing of IRM-protected documents as well and you’ll be able to do so in Safari on a Mac as well as in Firefox or IE on a PC.

Finally, for those of you who have been dying to change the look and feel of OWA, we’re bringing OWA themes back; adding several OWA themes so you can match the OWA experience to your particular style. Oh yeah, and yes, the reading pane can be placed on the bottom or the right side.

All The Mobility, All the Time

While Exchange Active Sync (EAS) has become the de facto standard for mobile communication, there is no resting on any laurels in Redmond here either. In SP1, mobile users will be treated with tether-free IRM support in EAS, enabling you to send and receive IRM-protected mail without having previously connected your device to Windows Mobile Device Center to provision IRM. Updated EAS capabilities also enable support for send-as, support for notifying the user if their device has been placed on block or quarantine by their admin, full implementation of conversation view including the ability to sync only unique parts of messages. Also, for those users who need help setting up their mobile device to access mail via POP/IMAP/SMTP, we’ve added information in OWA to provide them the server names for these services. For those of you who haven’t already seen Michael Higashi’s blog post from March, take a look to read about all the updated Outlook Mobile capabilities already delivered.

We know you all love PowerShell, as do we, but SP1 will bring several new management UI enhancements to enable a number of management tasks in the Exchange Management Console (EMC) and Exchange Control Panel (ECP). Here’s a taste:
